Global Transmission Technologies, Economics, Competition and Production 2008-2017

A Rolling Intelligence Service

Background

Transmissions are key to achieving the right balance between performance, driveability and efficiency. Efficiency is now the number one driver as CO2 reduction takes centre stage. However, powertrain designers need to ensure that improvements in this area are made without sacrifice in others. Increasingly, new transmission variants are being used to facilitate innovative hybrid powertrain systems.

KGP’s group-sponsored projects in the transmissions field go back to the early 1990s. The current project will be undertaken during the first half of 2008 subject to the timing of sponsor sign-up.

What’s New?

Items of note since our last group-sponsored project in 2006 include:

  • All current studies are being conducted on a bespoke basis founded on KGP's acknowledged and growing knowledge base in the field
  • the increasing focus on CO2 given the latest policy announcements in Europe and the USA;
  • the impact of growing economies like China, not only on overall demand but also the economics and consequent shares of the different technologies;
  • the exceptional faith being put on DCTs in Europe despite, up till now, a failure to meet desired performance and weight targets;
  • New ways to improve CVT performance emanating principally from Japan;
  • Interesting developments in some of the under-the-skin components especially in the field of transmission control;
  • The launch of the 8-speed AT;
  • Changing consumer attitudes to automatic transmission variants;
  • Parameters for choice of technology and benchmarking of industry perceptions on these parameters

Scope

On-going studies, as before, cover Europe in detail.  In addition the global scope of the project covers the BRICs countries of Brazil, Russia, China and India as well as North America and Japan.
